SOTHEBY'S DAY TWO: SCHLOBACH'S TIME TO SHINE
SOTHEBY'S IMPRESSIONIST AND MODERN DAY SALE: DAY TWO
From today's sale, my favorite lot was a controversial one -- the cover lot of the Impressionist and Modern Day Sale, bu but an artist barely anyone has ever heard of. "Les Falaises," Willy Schlobach's Impressionist canvas from 1907, is a gorgeous, glittering, pastel masterpiece of a thing. Schlobach was deeply influenced by the Pointilist work of Georges Seurat, which is readily apparent in the precise little dots that build the cliffs of this work.
Perhaps my favorite thing about it, though: Schlobach was known as a "Belgian Luminist," which is truly the most perfect term for this painting. It GLOWS.
